once you get in, your GED has absolutely diddly squat to do with how fast you advance. it's entitrely up to you and the regs. most of the first couple of paygrades have a minimum time in service/time in grade beftre you can advance, like six months as an E1 before you can put on E2, that sort of thing. later on, you will have to pass tests or be screened for promotion, but as long as you work hard and don't screw up, your chances are pretty good.

e-1 to e-4 is all pretty much given just based on time of sevice, it'll come fast if you're a hard worker, but there are minimum times before you can get your next rank. Once you start going to the boards E-5, 6, 7 ect. they will take your education into consideration. I don't think it will stop you from having a sucessfull career but by the time you start getting into the higher ranks like E-8 they really prefer that you have some type of degree. You also have to consider the people you'll be competing against for the promotion slots have a higher level of education, that gives them a little shoe up. I'd just say if you plan on making it a career then take some college courses online, it'll look really good when promotion time rolls around.

Your education doesn't matter when it comes to being a Marine. What matters is how you handle your school in the Corps and how you apply it once you get to your unit. Just work your butt off, do as you are told, remember there is a chain of command to follow. As for gaining rank...that depends on what the Corps needs in your MOS and if you have the points needed to gain. Do your MCI's, be a good Marine, and you should do well.

No, it's not hard to work your way up the ranks. I made SGT in 4 yrs. Keep in shape, your nose clean (stay out of trouble), maybe take a few classes through the Marine Corps Institute. Most bases also offer classes through a college nearby that you can take on base.
Good Luck.

No it won't affect you promotions. Just make sure you stay in shape, give your job 110%, and above all stay out of trouble. Take college courses. Do your MCI's and you'll move through the ranks. You can move as fast as your willing to put effort into. Good luck.

no. Once you are in no one cares what you have(diploma, ged, whatever) Study for your advancment exams, and work hard you will make it. One of my good friends made E-5 in only 3 years with a GED.
