that dude would have been better off as a boxer if he trained hard and got some speed he would have been a good fighter to watch

He'll be out of MMA soon enough. After a few embarassing defeats from some decent fighters, hopefully he'll go away.

He doesn't have the skill to fight pro boxers, his streetfighting style includes elbows, shoves and other techniques that boxers can't do. Since he's used to barenuckle fighting then MMA gloves would feel a more natural transition to him.
If he keeps training as hard as he has, he'll be a powerful MMA fighter, I don't know if that would've been the case had he chosen boxing.

he would get killed in boxing, because all the top heavyweights now have more power and skill.
MMA is perfect for the grizzly-bearded one, because most MMA shows are in Vegas, and all fighters get a free buffet when fighting.
