We'd like to have some people over and project a movie onto the back of our 2 story house on maybe a large white sheet or something. What is the cheapest way to do this?

that is pretty much the cheapest way to do that. probably renting a projector instead of buying one is cheaper, and if you can use a white sheet that you already have instead of buying a screen.

A video projector will be your best bet. Some are available with a built-in DVD player and speakers, so that is all you will really need. Less expensive models won't have the built-in items, but hooking up a laptop computer (and external speakers) will do just as good, and you'll save some money. Look for at least 1200 lumens, or the picture will be hard to see.

The white sheet as a screen should be acceptable, but I would reccomend buying a video projection screen if you plan to do this more than once, or maybe renting. Projector screens have a more reflective surface that will give you a brighter, clearer picture. You'll also need to get rid of any other light sources, such as patio lights. Plan your movie nights on moonless nights if you can (check your local weather for the lunar phase).

To figure out what projector to use you should examine the video brightness rating. More lumens are better so look for a bigger number. This is really important for outdoor applications. For a screen, I would suggest purchase of a new large fine weave high thread count bright white sheet. Walmart has these. This could even be treated with white stage paint (real cheap) or other paint to make it really reflective. Attach this to a long board and make what is known in theater as a scrim. The real trick is sound. A small home theater system for indoor will probably just blow up when you try to make it loud enough for out doors. First thing is to put a windy fan blowing on whatever is used for a power amplifier to help its cooling. Second is to use speakers that are not tiny like so many home system. Besty Bu, (best buy) insignia amp and speakers will actually play pretty loud without blowing. DO NOT turn up the bass as it will just break. Again, tiny speakers will not work outside, you will need something larger.

Basically, you'll need a projector, a screen, and either a laptop ot DVD Player w/ sound. The simplest method is to just take the projector and hook up your laptop/DVD Player to it and then broadcast it onto a white sheet or tarp. I would recommend the tarp though due to bleeding issues.

If you want to know more here is a great site for outdoor theater.
