Check www.kayak.com or www.sidestep.com for comparative shopping for airfare rates and hotels. I have not found a good rate on Expedia nor Orbitz for Thailand. Cathay Pacific airlines is having a West Coast USA price sale starting around USD734. Since you did not mention where you are flying from. I don't know if this helps. EVA Air are having specials from San Francisco and Seattle to Asia.

The hotels in Thailand don't penalize you for a single occupancy. Though they might charge you if you bring a guest up to your room. I use www.asiarooms.com for my room reservations and they have about the best rates and cover most of the cities in Thailand.

Good luck
