how do i claim vat back when leaving the uk and travel back to africa

You need to buy things from a shop which is part of the Tax reclaim scheme. Most have a minimum purchase, usually £50. They will give you a form to complete. You have to show this form together with the unopened, unused items when you leave the UK. The VAT will then either be given to you then, or sent to you later.
