Wholeheartedly YES!
Condoms could save so many lives, and so much money (which could go to improving those saved lives)!
Contraceptives are banned because of the traditional teaching of "natural law", which is basically that semen has to go in the vagina and nowhere else, or else it is a sin, because of the bible passage about Onan.
Story from thousands of years ago, or millions of lives saved? I wonder, if god exists, would he be more pissed about a bit of semen in a condom, or about the indifference to people in desparate need of help (part of which could come from condoms)?

The Pope cannot justify a sin in order to do a perceived good. The Pope does not have the authority to change the teaching behind the "no contraception" rule.
If the Pope were to start saying things like...well they are okay in certain circumstances, then it all begins to unravel.
Approving the use of condoms to prevent Aids is like approving homosexual sex and premarital sex. This would also give a window to Catholic married couples to say well if it's okay for them...then we can too.
We are all called to lead a chaste life. This means no sex before marriage, sex should be open to life, no divorce, no affairs. If everyone were to follow this (God's desire for us) there would be no aids, no abortion, no STDs.
Now you might say that's impossible and we could never obtain that...but that doesn't mean we should lower our standards. God's teachings and laws must remain as they are, they cannot be changed to fit our society. We can look at the stance of the Pope and see just how far we have spiraled down from what God created us to be.

The problem is, AIDS isn't caused just by homosexual sex. It's caused by sharing needles, blood transfusions... The Catholics have never agreed with birth control, and the Vatican saying ok to condoms, whether or not it's in response to the AIDS epidemic, makes them look hypocritical AND not anti-gay. He'd be condoning gays and contraceptives - that would never fly with Catholics.
By the same token, if the pope says they should give out needles to addicts, he would also be condoning drug use.

The Church has been against artificial birth control for about 2,000 years including condoms since they were invented.
Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
3. Married couples should welcome God's gift of children and, therefore, artificial birth control is against the will of God.
If the world is going to ignore teachings about chastity (1 & 2), then why is the world so upset about teaching artificial birth control (3)?
People who are already ignoring the more important teachings about chastity (1 and 2) should have no problem ignoring the less important teaching of artificial birth control (3).
Even if a person infected with AIDS was to use a condom to help protect his or her spouse, condoms are not 100% effective (read the box) and the spouse may be infected and die anyway. A person who truly loves their spouse would not endanger them in this way.
In regards to sex outside of marriage, the Church makes it a practice not to tell people how to sin. Fornication with or without a condom is still fornication. Adultery with or without a condom is still adultery.
With love in Christ.

>>Aids being the problem it is, should the Pope rethink their contraceptives policy?<<
AIDS being the problem it is, should the United States rethink Lawrence v. Texas? Men who have sex with men accounted for 71% of all HIV infections among male adults and adolescents in 2005, even though only about 5% to 7% of male adults and adolescents in the United States identify themselves as men who have sex with men.

the pope aparently never had sex so he has no idea of how men would use them.abstinance would be best but as most men are not so strong I think any thing that would help stem the spread of aids is a good idea.
the pope is a man with out experiance of sex ( I hope) so he will not change his mind. but I agree he is wrong.

The Pope is nothing but a paid politician who makes decisions only to hold his office. It's all about money and politics. So basically, the Pope is full of crap. :)
