Dogs can become depressed even to the point of that they stop eating and drinking water. Most times it's due to lack of exercise and/or lack of attention but there can be environmental issues as well such as being ill or a change in routine, loss of a family member (human or pet) Many things cause depression in our furry friends but it's best to take the animal to a vet to be sure it's not ill first before you try to diagnose it yourself, the Internet is an awesome wealth of information but if you misdiagnose an animal you could be doing more harm than good.

it depends on how bonded your dogs are. I foster dogs, and have 3 of my own. My dogs are older, and when I have a younger foster dog they get annoyed! Right now we are taking a break from fostering (just got the last one adopted friday!) and my dogs are so happy! They are acting more happy and active now there there is not some young dog around bugging them. Also I can now spend more time with my dogs, which is what they really want. My dog is more bonded with me than any of the other dogs, so I am sure he would be happy to be an only child. But I made the commitment to my other 2 as well, so I would never get rid of any of them. We are actually moving to a more expensive house next week, so they will have more room to run! If your older dog is bonded closely with the younger one he will get depressed. Just make sure to spend extra time working with him. Even if he is well trained, any dog will benefit from training. I recommend enrolling him in a refresher class at a local pet store. He will enjoy the time to socialize and bond with you, and will not think about his missed pack member.

Absolutely!! I volunteer at the local shelter. When I go in to walk dogs they always have a list of dogs that need immediate attention due to depression. I guess being abandoned or lost and stuck at the pound will do that.

No!!!!!! They can get sad, sure, but clinical depression is a purely human affliction. Some vets and pharm manufacturers would love you to believe dogs can suffer from it, so they can sell you their overpriced products. Next thing they'll be prescribing Ritalin to drug up hyperactive puppies.

yes they can. in fact it is fairly common for a dog to become depressed during their lifetime. hopefully, the dog's vet can recognize it and help eliminate the depression.

when ever i yell at my dog for peeing on the carpet she gives me the doggy face @;_@; which makes me feel bad and want to hug her and cuddle her. so, yea, dogs can become depressed in my opinion.

They have feelings just like people do. If a dog gets happy (tail wagging and playful), mad (growls and stares) I know they can get sad and depressed (howling and whining).

Absolutely. They have feeling just like humans. Did something in his life change recently? Did you move, lose another pet, was he recently ill? I would talk to your vet if you think it's serious, otherwise you can do some googling & see waht you come up with. Hope he feels better soon.
