When I was in Army Basic we got our letters as they came, near the end of day. We had to do 10 push ups for each letter we received and they were worth it. That was in 1982 though. Things may have changed since then.

My son's unit in Basic, sent address card' to every one after the first week. From then he got mail when it was sent to him. The army wants it that way because the first week is when they get Billeted , uniform's, shot's. Take tests, learn basic military skill's. The recruits are to busy to write home. I assume the other branch's are the much the same. My first week of Boot camp was hell week. We didn't have anything to write on . Then the Navy made us all write home. We had to turn in a letter to be mailed to a parent or guardian. Dont pay attention to the Husky breeder from Alaska. He was in a different army from a different world . I think they do in the brig or stockade. I was in the navy 47 years ago .They never opened my mail, or anybody's that I knew. My son did a deployment to Iraq, none of his mail or packages were opened.

You get them everyday , they cant store mail for you thats a federal crime to withold someones mail. So when they recieve it they will pass it to you, the only time it gets check when a package comes in. recruits are not allowed certain items ie: candies or chocolate. Some may have rules when you can write letters but sundays are always the free time.

Recruits are issued mail after a set period of time in Basic Training has passed. That time frame is not all that long and after the cumbersome military delivery process, recruits are handed their personal mail from family and friends in as fast time as possible.
Death or tragedy in family notification via American Red Cross is IMMEDIATELY brought to the recruits attention.

No, they are forwarded to the recruit as soon as the mail arrives to the base where he/she is receiving their training.
mail call is usually in the afternoon, just like receiving mail at home.
