I use a good amount of body spray and I was wondering if that contributes to the pollution of the air, because if it does, I'm willing to quit using it.

Check the ingredients and make sure that the chemicals in the spray and in the propellant are non toxic, both for you and for the environment. You'd be amazed about the stuff that gets put into body products.

More than anything it depends on the propellant being used. In the past many aerosols used chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) as the propellant, these lead to depletion of the ozone layer and are extremely effective greenhouse gases. Their use has now been banned and propane and butane are often used as an alternative, it's this gas that makes many aerosols highly flammable.

The canister should list the ingredients, the first one will probably be alcohol or an alcohol derivative, this is the liquid in which the perfume and other ingredients are suspended. Next is normally the propellant and often includes butane, isobutane and / or propane. After that will be a whole load of chemicals which will exist in small amounts.

Ideally you want an aerosol that uses compressed air or is hand pumped and contains primarily natural ingredients.
