i work at home so generally i dont have any problems with spending quality time with a dog. however there are some days in the week where i might be gone for 3 hours. is this acceptable?

Well if he or she is trained well pretty long I can mine in the house for about 5 hours but I don't recommend it since they need everything all the time....hehe

Just went to a business meeting and she behaved very well for 5 hours *_*

Yes, as long as you leave it plenty of water and feed it before you leave there should be no problems.

My neighbor left his dogs alone for one week and if it wasn't for me they would be dead right now since the temperature for last week was in the high 90's!

Yup, 3 hours is fine.. If you can't trust the dog, crate him when you leave.

sure , i would say no more than 8 hours, only because
you need to check on her water ,food etc ,and letting her out to pee,any longer hire a dog sitter
