The rise of bacteria in your body triggers substances that tell your brain to rise the temperatures to kill the bacteria.
So fever is not a bad thing is your own body defense mechanism against infection. Is dangerous when is very high above 104 F it can cause seizures, cause your neurons are literally cooking. just like bacteria can't live in high temperatures neither can our cells. That why a very high temperature is a medical emergency.

you could say the hypothalamus gland. Information sent to the brain indicating the presence of an infection (via the immune system) tends to trigger, among other things, the hypothalamus to ramp up the body's temperature. This is done to kill any intruding infectious agents which can't survive the elevated temperature. Unfortunately, plenty can.
