A picture would be helpful.

It may possibly be a black capped lory or mutation of one.

Def not a rainbow lorikeet. The colours & places of the colours are wrong. RL also don't have black on their heads.

Please put the photo up here so we can ALL see it. I think we would all like to know what it is. Thank you.

I would agree that it sounds closest to a black capped lory. I've linked a picture.
There are over 330 species of parrots ( not 600 as someone claimed) but not all are in the pet trade.

Might be a rainbow lorikeet. If it is a rainbow lorikeet you need to make sure you know how to feed him properly. They only eat nectar, not seeds or other solid foods. Here's a photo: http://home.iprimus.com.au/readman/rainbow.htm

There are 600 species of parrots, so it may take a while to pin down the kind. Can you post a photo?

It may be, if it is pretty big, a Green Wing Macaw http://www.petbirdpage.com/breed.asp?breed=grenwing
Or a Scarlet Macaw http://www.petbirdpage.com/breed.asp?breed=scarlet . Hope it helps.
