Battle of Antietam in the American Civil War. It was the bloodiest single day battle in American history with almost 23,000 casualties. The bloodiest battle was Gettysburg with 53,00 casualties. The American Civil War also had the most American military deaths at about 620,000. More than all of America's wars before or since combined.
And people complain about Iraq. Sheesh!

US Civil war had the most casualties: 625,000 dead. Despite what people are saying here, the battle of Gettysburg was not the biggest ( "only" about 8,000 men were killed and another 26,000 or so wounded ).
The biggest losses in a single battle would be the battle of Normandy ( AKA D-Day ). 29,000 dead and 109,000 wounded. Although world war 2 battles tend to last weeks or months, so it's hard to really compare.

Well as world population increases, so does the size of armies, and the size of death lists. But I would assume the second world war, as we entered pretty late in WWI. I also assume this because it was the bloodiest conflict in the history of man, with an estimated 60 million dead.
However, the civil war may have more American soldiers dead. Because America was fighting itself..

The Civil War.
The bloodiest period of American history was between the begining of the American Civil War to the end of WWII (eighty year span) where 1 million American soldiers had died in various wars). That's about the number that die each year in Africa from malaria.
