I would say the son should change his beneficiary immediately.

wow as a mother of a serving air force son could not ever EVER imagine saying anything along the lines joke or not.........we had a couple fo very serious discussions about this re the money and who gets what [I am sole beneficiary] and I told him I would whatever he has asked me to do with it BUT this is the one time I will be most happy to not try and do what he has asked............
Even in jest it is a very very poor thing to fall out of any ones mouth let alone a mother and as such maybe you either revisit the conversation with her OR put someone else down as getting the cash should the matter every arise...........a trusted aunt / sister / etc..........
Take care and hope it is worked out.

I wouldn't react at all except to change my SGLI coverage to anyone but my gold digging crass mother ASAP. And just for fun make a copy of the new SGLI and send it to her for Christmas in her Christmas card with a note saying "Still think your childs death is funny?" She should get the point and call to kiss butt to gt her name back on the SGLI again. Just never put her on it again. Pretty creepy mom, but way more common than you think.

my mom would never joke like that with me, i've joked about it with her but she got upset, i'de like to think that most parents would care more for their son/daughters life than a paycheck, but the world ain't perfect and i know some other soldiers who parents aren't on their SGLI because their just wishing their kid would die so they can make some money its sad really

Wow, my husband is in Iraq, and your question brought tears to my eyes. No you are not over reacting. But let her know how much it hurt you. That may help you heal. With a mother like that, who needs insurgents!!!!!

Only the soldier himself is allowed to make fun of that. I've made jokes about that situation as it relates to me, but my parents never have.

That's one of those big no-no jokes. However, if someone really does joke about that, it'd be more worthwhile to tell them off as opposed to removing them from your will. Save that for when they're serious.

Well if my Mom joked about that I would simply change my beneficiary. If I had no other immediate family I would give it to charity.

Tell thats ok as long as spending the money makes her think of her son.
Seriously though this remark might be her way of coping with her sons deployment.

I wouldn't be offended unless she was actually serious. As you said, maybe she just has a weird way of dealing with her stress and anxiety of her son going to iraq.

Let's just say she would not be beneficiary of my will nor my insurance policy. She'd not see a dime from my death.
