I used to feel safe without a loaded weapon until seven years ago and I woke up one night and a man was in my living room trying to steal my television. He threw my own books at me when I tried to dial 911 and said he would kill me if I called the sheriff.
I ran back to my bedroom and got an unloaded revolver and was afraid he would see it was unloaded but pulled my bluff anyway, luckily he was too drunk and doped to notice the empty cylinder when I stuck it in his face and left.
Now all my revolvers and pistols are loaded and within reach no matter which room I am in, I am close to a loaded weapon.

Yep - because I sleep very lightly (a mom thing, even though the kids are almost grown) and I know that having a weapon loaded near the bed is not the best thing to do - you could easily shoot a loved one or pet.
My city is just like every other city - we've had creepy crap happen here on our street - and we get good police response. Plus I know how to defend myself otherwise, how to make most anything into a weapon, and spouse has taken the takeaway and retention classes for weaponry.
I do keep everything locked up tight after dark, and the dogs are big scary girls who will bark at the slightest non normal noise.
Sounds like it sucks badly where you live - I'm sorry for that.
I'm not posting my religion because it has no bearing on common sense.

I was once in the military. The Marines have a great saying.
"Yea though I walk through the valley of darkness, I shall fear no evil for I am the baddest M-F around".
Sometimes I have a knife nearby, but I don't really feel afraid often. I've had shootings near my home, and often hear sirens. A few weeks ago, I was walking down my street and found two live 9mm rounds on the street. Interestingly, they were left there by a Marine who dropped them when leaving his car.
Really though, I don't think I'm interesting enough to be in danger.

I do feel safe without a loaded weapon at my disposal, yes. However, I keep a variety of bladed weapons displayed on the wall in my bedroom for both style and historical value. Any of these could serve defensive purposes if need be, but that's not my intention for them. One must keep in mind one's surroundings, and my home is largely encompassed by forest. The nearest neighbor is literally miles away. I'm not located in an urban environment, where more thorough measures for self-defense might be called for.
To the last, I am an atheist.

I do feel safe at night without a loaded gun at my arms reach, cuz I live in a more secure apt. building, with sercuity cameras and a buzzer to be let in.Not like my other apt that I had live at before, you never knew who would be sleeping or hanging out in your hallways, once you got outside you had to deal with the drug dealers, hookers, and low lifes hanging around. Not to mention the crazy ones and then you have your everyday drunks or crack heads bugging you for money so they can either get a "drink" or score with the drug dealers. And the funniest thing of all you never seen a COP around becuz they were probably in the donut shop. But my life is much better more relaxed and smooth I don't have to get whipped lash looking over my shoulder all the time or try growing eyes in the back of my head.

What is Safety in an Ever Changing, infinite-boundless universe in which you inhabit a Rock, which wobbles on something called an AXIS around a big hot Ball of Fire with Balls of ice whizzing by, fast and large enough to obliterate the whole planet while you sleep?
What is Safety but an illusion, whos veil has been pierced for the last 6 years in these so called UNITED STATES.
You live and you control your Environment as best you can by any means you can.
Period.
Still, at the end of the day, there are still powers beyond our control, so then you realize safety comes in giving up control, because you NEVER really had it anyway.

As it happens, I *do* have a loaded weapon at arms reach---a Ruger .357 Magnum. *G*
I also have a loaded SKS rifle in the closet, and just for good measure, a Gerber Bowie knife tucked under the mattress (handle out) and a medieval flail a friend of mine made for me on the windowsill.
Better to have and not need, than need and not have, that's what I always say. :-)
"38. Away from his arms in the open field
A man should not fare a foot;
For never he knows when the need for a spear
Shall arise on the distant road."

My husband and I live on an Airforce base so I feel so much more safe being on base , like noone can touch us from the outside thank God so I def. feel you there but I have to sleep with a phone at night usually or atleast I go and get it when my husband leaves for work in the morning, so I can dial 911 if anyone breaks in.

I am Atheist.. I live in a very small community I rarely lock my doors and windows (only when we are leaving town for an extended period of time) let alone sleep with a loaded weapon near me.. (All our guns are under lock and key in the gun case all equiped with trigger guards and/or slide locks)
Just over 15 months ago we traveled out of town for a birthday party, we locked the doors before leaving when we got home our front door was standing open with a chair from our dining room and several boxes pushed back behind it.. .. Apparently the latch had not caught properly and the wind had blown it open.. Instead of being gone for the day as we had planned we were gone for 3 days due to an avalanche in the pass blocking the road..
One of our neighbors came over a short time after we finally got back home and said she had closed the door several times tried to block it closed with items but couldn't get the latch to catch and the door to stay closed.. She had called a local locksmith to fix the door and he was due to arrive any minute (She couldn't get one out sooner due to the winter storm)...
We have easily $7,000 in computer equipment, $5,000 in home theatre equipment, $12,000 in jewelry, $10,000 in guns and other valuables in the house.. Nothing was missing, out of place or even touched...
Living in a small community where everyone knows everyone else definitely has its advantages..
