I have read a lot of misconceptions and misinterpretations of the scriptures from non Christians. Verses are taken out of context and the meaning is twisted. Many things which they claim are in the Bible are not. The Bible contains scripture which deals with everything we will ever come across during our time here on earth and a lot of people will apply a certain verse to a situation it is not meant for. Most are not aware of the writings of historians who lived during the first century who recorded many events which are also in the Bible. Even if it's just for the sake of understanding that which you are debating, would any non Christians be interested in learning more about the Bible? I realize there may be non Christians who have studied the Bible. This question is for those who have not.

Actually, I used to be an evolutionist.
I would be very happy to read any of your books, especially any which I have misinterpreted.
My question is not would you like to read the Bible. It's would you like to understand the Bible.
Yes, there are historical writings from the first century which are completely separate from the Bible written by actual historians, not apostles, in which are recorded people, places and events that are also in the Bible.

No, I am not implying Christians should not learn the Bible.
Many of you have read my question and completely twisted my meaning.
One person even resorted to childish mockery.
If you have read the Bible and found it lacking, perhaps you don't understand what you have read.
Is there anyone out there who is able to communicate without displaying hatred and hostility?

To say that I'm responsible for your behavior is to say that I have control over you. I do not believe this to be true.
I know I'm not being condescending and I fully believe you know this also. This is a preprogrammed accusation which is used often by those who are blinded to their own intolerance and the vicious nature of their own words.

I don't consider myself a Christian. Although I was raised Catholic there was very little bible reading at that time in school, it was all the nun's and priests preaching the bible. After 8 years of that I went on my merry way trying to form my own beliefs.
I have tried to read the bible over the past many years but I have a very hard time understanding it. I am told it speaks in parables, maybe I don't quite get them. I have had several people suggest certain different parts to read and I do try but can only get into it few pages before being confused again.
I have only been here on YA for a short time and mostly all I hear about here are all the contradictions that are in the bible, so I am sort of at the point that I just don't know now.

How is this?
Are there any Christians who may be interested in learning more about science?
I have read a lot of misconceptions and misinterpretations of Scientific Theory from Christians. Words are taken out of context and the meaning is twisted. Many things which they claim that refute those Theories do not. Science contains evidence which deals with everything we will ever come across during our time here on earth and a lot of people will apply a certain quote to a situation it is not meant for. Most are not aware of the writings of scientists who lived during the the last 7,000 years who recorded many expirements which are also true today. Even if it's just for the sake of understanding that which you are debating, would any Christians be interested in learning more about Scientific Inquiry or perhaps more about Origin of the Species? I realize there may be Christians who have studied science. This question is for those who have not.
Sound good to you?
EDIT
You were an "evolutionist?" What is that? Like I know gravity exists ergo I am a gravitationist?
EDIT 2.0
Mockery? It sounds like mockery to paraphrase you inserting words like Bible with science? I just wanted you to know how you sound. Something hard for Xians to do. I know more about the bible and its religion than 99% of Xians. Let's have a go if you wish.
I have not misinterpreted it at all. How can I misinterpret the 5th commandment? How can I misinterpret that I am supposed to love my neighbor but homosexuals and pig eaters are going to hell? Maybe the questions ought to be directed inward. Are there parts of the bible you have misinterpreted and you wish to have better understanding of it. Ask, and I shall answer. I am atheist. It doesn't mean I cannot understand fiction. But you need my guidance so ask away and I will help you understand itin a much more historical way.

The Bible does NOT contain scripture dealing with everything we will come across. Where does the Bible teach about how to handle life if you are a hermaphrodite or some other sort of transgendered being? Where does the Bible teach about the possibility of life on other planets? Where does the Bible teach about memories of past lives?
The Bible is NOT a manual for everything in life.
I don't have to learn more about the Bible; I've read it many times, and used to teach Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was a music minister for 25 years. I'm no longer a Christian because I found Christian scripture lacking and unable to help me live my life.
Sorry, but your claim is false. Much of the Bible is metaphor, and the wish to make it not so drives too many Christians. Much of the Bible is recapitulation of earlier spiritual texts, from the creation to the flood, and even the resurrected god. It's not a necessarily bad collection of texts, but it was by no means original or new. The Jews merely did what other civilisations did, and created a cult around their creation myths.

Dear Diana, I read most of the responses before I opened it to answer. I find that people are just as Paul said they would be at 2 Timothy 3:1-5
I hope you find some one that would like to learn .
I will remind you what Jesus said.(Matthew 11:25) . . .At that time Jesus said in response: “I publicly praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intellectual ones and have revealed them to babes.. . So as I see the answers you have received are from people that know far more than you.
My only suggestion is to shake the dust off and read Mathew 7:6.
(Proverbs 1:2-5) . . .for one to know wisdom and discipline, to discern the sayings of understanding, 3 to receive the discipline that gives insight, righteousness and judgment and uprightness, 4 to give to the inexperienced ones shrewdness, to a young man knowledge and thinking ability. 5 A wise person will listen and take in more instruction, and a man of understanding is the one who acquires skillful direction,

If you are actually a bible scholar you might want to start with a lot of the Christians on this site, there seem to be quite a few who could do with further education on what the bible actually says...lol
Edit: When you imply that non Christians do not understand the Bible and are therefore unable to debate it, you open yourself up to some of the kinds of responses you are getting. Also implying that some find it lacking just because they don't understand it is a very condescending point of view.
Please take some kind of responsibility for your own assertions.

Your question should be directed at Christians. Christians are guilty of not understanding the bible and merely quote scripture their doctrine uses to justify their belief. If Christians understood the bible there would not be so many different churches, they would all be one church believing the same thing speaking the same thing.
Christians themselves do not read first century history or read writings of early church fathers.
To prove my point Southern Baptists claim Missionary baptist misquote scripture and take it out of context because they believe you can fall from Grace and the Missionary Baptist claim the Southern Baptist misquote scripture and take it out of context by believing that once saved always saved.
Baptist do not speak in tongues and believe the tongue speakers take the tongue scripture out of context and mis quote it and vice verse. I rest my case.Too much division and confusion

mosst of the non Christians on here have been hurt by Christians.
and most think they know the bible better than you.
a large percentage of them have studied the bible extensively.
and of the ones that misquote the bible, some do it on purpose and the others are so bent on impressing the others that they would never admit they don't know what they are talking about.

Diana, I know you think that you mean well. I came from Christianity, and am Atheist BECAUSE of reading the Bible and studying the religion more deeply. It's also been my experience that it is the Christians themselves who are the ones most often seen misqouting and misinterpreting the Bible. Of those who aren't, they tend to cherry-pick it to death, looking for passages that back up whatever hateful view they've formed. The trouble is, they don't seem to have to look very deeply to find them.
Why not extend your offer of education to your own faith first? At least then we'll be on a level playing field.
