Did you close the credit card account in writing after you got your 0 balance statement 9 yrs ago?. Is it possible that someone else used your account? If you can get a copy of the cancelled check that would be your proof that it was paid off. You should also contact your mortgage company and let them know what is going on.

DO NOT send the collection people any money. Have them mail you proof of your debt and the statements that show you owe the money.

You also need to contact the credit bureaus and see if this debt is on your report. If you paid it in full and your account was in good standing it should still be on your report. It should be reporting as closed by consumer and the balance should be $0

If it wasn't in good standing or in collections before you paid it off it should only report for 7 years so it wouldn't be on your credit report today.

You may have owed them something 9 years ago but now almost everywhere it is past the SOL. Ask them to verify the debt and show you the documents. Ask them to only communicate in writing. If they take you to court go and claim it is past the SOL if it is in your state.
