Did we really lose? How is it possible that the US of A actually lost? i prefer to think of it more as a stalemate. We never lost a battle, yet we lost the war. How did those bastards get us?

hey barb... thanks for wasting my time with that "answer" The first guy seems like he was on to something though... He didn't really elaborate
Oh, and I don't want to know if you supported the war. I couldn't care less. What I should have put in the question was did the American leaders make any tactical mistakes? What did they do wrong, how did they blow it?

I'm sorry to add more details but fatticakes... I'm speechless. I'm sorry but you are just retarded. If you're not 5 years old then you are just one dumb SOB. Are you kidding? Holy s*** that's actually funny that somebody could be so dumb. I know it sounds harsh but that is pathetic.

It was a loss of Political will, not a military loss.

PS. There was mass protests concerning the war. We took Vietnam as a conflict from the French in order to put communism in check in south east Asia. After several years and in changing times, having soldiers losing there life wasn't a very good excuse to younger America to keep a war nobody wanted going. That, and there was a draft so young people really took notice of this. So, war protests took there toll on politicians, and President Nixon, the congress and senate found a way to leave Vietnam, it was called Vietnamization. So, the United Sates made an orderly withdrawal, the Viets took over, and two years after most of our forces where gone, the communists rolled into Saigon ending the war.
The United States never lost a major engagement, and even had tremendous success at guerrilla tactics as well.

This question gets asked frequently here on Yahoo Answers.
Unfortunately, you also get too many opinions disguised as "answers" here. On this issue, many Americans just need someone to blame - the spectre of defeat haunts them relentlessly.

Can you just blame "politics" without explaining what the politics really were? I think few here understand that poltics were for the Vietnamese - they fought from 1945 - 1974 to be an independent nation. Many Americans still (30 years later) see them as nothing but "bastards" or inhuman communists.

Can you blame the "Liberal Media" for the political defeat? Once again, many Americans need to find the traitor in their own ranks. Can you ask a Vet? Yes, you can. Some Vets, such as Loren Baritz, make the effort to find out what illusions made the U.S. fight, the illusions that helped the U.S. lose, and the legacy that still haunts the people of America today.

I support Army Retired Guy, his answer was the best of the lot.

The Vietnamese were NOT high in technology or power sources back in the 1950s, but they defeated the French by hauling artillery across mountain ranges in the mud burning up precious food resources as they went. Yes, they had technical support from the Russians and Chinese. The U.S. gave technical support to the ARVN. The war in Vietnam is still a good example of how a people (the Vietnamese) could win - without the higher technology the Americans and the ARVN had.

The "bastards" - as you refer to the people of Vietnam - got you by fighting you relentlessly for 10 years. You underestimated the enemy. You won all the battles - but it was a political war, and the U.S. should never have divided Vietnam into "North" and South."

South Vietnam's allies won all the major battles, sure. Ia Drang, Long Tan, Tet, Cambodia, Hamburger Hill and the countless other victories... good tactics but poor strategy. Hence, a lost war. They should have taken the battle straight to North Vietnam, but they didn't even try.

The same as they are getting us now, they kill 10 of us while they lose one of them. We lost in numbers of casualities and deaths, but in the long run Vietnam now is a place that people want to go and visit and vacation. We lost in asence that our government put billions of dollars to rebuild Vietnam better than it was before the war. So it cost us as tax payers through
increase in gas, oil, incometax, property tax, ciggerate tax, for give my spelling, increase in goods, food clothing and the list goes on, So did we win? not really. The pain and suffering and the fight with VA still goes on with Vietnam Veterans, who still ,beleave it or not are still waiting for thier benifits after all these years. Now that we have this stalemate war Vietnam Veterans are put in the lost files and forgotten. I know because I have been fighting for my bennifits for twenty five years and all I get is a computer generated letter every 3 months saying " we are still working on your case and we are gathering more evidence and we are sorry for the delay. I now have over 75 of these letters. Thats our government for you.

Sincerely yours,
Fred M. Hunter

I don't think it's a good idea to call people in one country bastards!!! And what's more, there are no winners in wars. The battle in Vietnam, I think, is the US's own fault! The people in VN, before the war started by the Western, had been suffered from 1000-year of war with China, and after that 1000 year, they just had little time of peace. If you watch many movies, news about VN war at that time, you will realize that VN people had to suffered a lot, many of them died, and untill today, the consequences of dioxin prevent many of them from having real happiness. Why did US have to take over one country, while the country has been one of the largest countries all over the world?
