In islam, Muhammad is not the only prophet. Is it essential to believe that Muhammad is a prophet?

If I believe in Allah but do not believe that Muhammad is his prophet, ie I think Muhammad is a charlatan and therefore we do not need to blindly follow what Muhammad said. Am I still considered a muslim?

What about people living before Muhammad's time. There wasn't a Muhammad yet, so were they muslims?

Muhammad is a fraud and has always been a fraud, and if you are a Muslim making that statement about Muhammad I sure hope you insurance is paid up.
