According to Christians, it is the purported fictional purging of unwanted or unfaithful soles, bodies or minds towards the end of the world...Jesus flies down, picks up all of the "worthy" ones, sits in on a trumpet quartet (or is it a quintet), and then rises up to Heaven again.

1) euphoria
2) The doctrine of the ingathering, which has been corrupted.
The rapture doctrine originated with a vision that a young woman had in the 1820s. Her vision was used by John Darby to say that the Lord was going to come back and "Rapture" his church. They would rise to meet him in the air and all of that is true, but not as it's been taught. Because in the 1850s Cyrus Scofield invented Dispensationalism, which is the doctrine that history is divided into dispensations and that the last dispensation is the thousand year reign of Jesus on this earth. The Rapture was taught by him to come before seven years of tribulation after the end of the church age, and would be the wisking away of the church, who would spend those seven years at the marriage supper of the Lamb in heaven, and then come back to earth to reign with Jesus for a thousand years. There's a whole lot more, but the main point of the Rapture doctrine is its teaching that there would be those who are left behind, and they would have a chance to repent of sin once they realized that they had been "Left Behind." There is no pretribulation rapture, we have been in the tribulation from the beginning of the church, when Jesus ascended and sent the Holy Spirit. And we will be gathered together to meet Jesus in the air when he returns at the last trumpet, when the dead in Christ shall rise, and we which remain at his coming shall rise to meet him in the air. There will be probably simultaneously, the great white throne judgment, and this world will be no more.

This teaching began with Jesus and was later clarified by the Apostle Paul.
There is a day in the future when Jesus will return to the air above the earth and with the trump of God and the voice of an arch angel, all the true Christians who have died, will be raised back to life and a twinkling of an eye later, the Christians who are still alive at the time will have their bodies changed from mortal to immortal.
And in that way all true believers will be taken up to heaven.
After that the judgement of God will fall on the sinners which remain on the earth.

First, RAPTURE is a NEW AGE term coined by a 15 year old girl in Scotland named Margaret MacDonalds and turned into a SOUND BITE in 1860 by a New Age evangelist.
It's NOT in the actually KJV bible as RAPTURE
It is used to describe the concept of ALL the souls being drawn up by God to Heaven for the final judgement.
It is used to describe, in flowery terms, an event detailed in Revelations.
The "tribulation" the calling up of all to God where we eventually face the book of life.

The rapture is when Christ comes to snatch the dead first then the believers in Christ (The Church) before the tribulation (seven year period when the Anti-Christ will rule the world)
1 Thessalonians 4:13-17
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

In the entire bible, specifically the KJV, you cannot read the word RAPTURE.
What's in the bible is this- Written in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17,
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;
then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."

I can't explain it really well, but like in the Left Behind book series, when God raptures believers to heaven, like all people who are doing whatever will disappear, jet pilot, fire truck driver and all will instantly be taken to heaven if they are believers.
