it depends on how far you want to hit it and how much spin you want its usually inbetween 54 and 60 degrees. I suggest you go to a driving range and demo each degree to see what suits you.

Loft on a sand wedge is typically 55 to 57 degrees, but the factor that makes it a sand wedge is the bounce. Basically bounce is the degree of trailing edge on the flange as measured from the leading edge of the club.

Most Sand Wedges have a high degree of bounce, over 10 degrees (if you look at the wedge clubhead from the side, you'll see the back of the bottom of the club is lower than the front) so that the club doesn't dig into the sand, but actually "splashes" the ball out by gliding underneath the ball at impact.

actually a sand wedge is 55-57. 59-60 is a flop wedge and 52-53 is a gap wedge. 50-51 is an approach wedge. and 48-49 is a pitching wedge. those are the 4 main wedges but there are a few more wedges out there but they are not really important. a new wedge was introduced last year by a company called fell golf that is 73 degrees and takes all of the guess work out of a flop shot.

A traditional Sand wedge is between 54 and 56 degrees. (All depends on the Manufacturer) anything higher is considered a lob wedge

All the answers are wrong except for wbaker777's. Also, the guy above me is partly correct.

So yeah, 54*-56* are considered sand wedges.
