It was not a civil war. The south had absolutely no designs on a single square-inch of territory of a single northern state. The south had no desire to rule the north. Not a single shot would have been fired after Ft. Sumter if the north hadn't come looking for trouble. It was a war of northern aggression.

It's called a civil war because it's a war between groups people with common social connections. Like the war between the states.

with regard to the american civil war, the union fought the confederates, thus the country is now called the united states of america because of the union victory
