Neither of these terriers will be happy living in an apartment with a Cat. These are both high energy dogs that need LOTS of outdoor time. The Scottish Terrier has very keen hunting instincts. You may get him to coexist with a cat, but why try it. Terriers are independent, bred to operate out there on point position. Great hunters, great diggers. Scotties wouldn't be a dog of choice around very small children. They resent being pushed, pulled, poked and prodded, etc. There are other breeds that would probably flourish in an apartment setting. You need to decide how much time you have to devote to dog ownership. Either of these breeds will need at least 2 long walks a day, plan on 30+minutes each time, and lots of "field time" to do terrier things. You will do the dog a favor if choose one that is more suited to apartment life.
Good luck.

I would say the schnauzer out of the two. Although schnauzers can be a little terrier like, terriers will do whatever they want, and have very high energy. They are more cat-like than anything. I would want my child to have a good companion dog that will do what he/ she tells it to do.

As a Schnauzer owner and handler for many years I can say that if you raise them with children and you go to training classes from day one, you will never change your breed. Its when people do not train terriers that they will run the roost. Also...in owning many schnauzers, I find the females are actually a little less barky... please find a good breeder as they can have some serious health issues.

Neither. Terriers are not a good choice for an apartment. They are active and yappy and will get you kicked out of your apartment. Terriers are also not good with cats. They have been bred to kill small varmints and will usually chase and harrass a cat.
You need to find a breed with a low to meduim energy level.
Have you thought of maybe a toy or minature poodle?

Neither of those..
Schnauzers bark and bark and can be snippy.
Terriers are very mouthy and Scotties can be sort of oily and smell as they get older.
Good luck finding the perfect dog for your family
