Can a person go ahead with chemo..if they have to also be on antibiotics? Dad is suppose to start chemo in the next week...but because the surgeon screwed up when inserting his cathater.. he now has an bladder infection.. I want him to start chemo asap...I just hope this won't stop the "beginning' date. of next Tues..

thanks..

It could slow him down by a few days. But it is better to postpone than to go into chemo with an active infection.

The chemo will cause a suppression in is immune system, which will make him susceptible to infection. Its not good to walk into that with an infection already going on.

Its a balancing act. Talk to his doctor about your concerns, but be patient.

Good luck to your father as he starts treatment.

The anti biotics are fine during chemo and are actually often administered during chemo anyway as a prophalactic (sp??) against infections.

However, going into with a bladder infection could be bad. I would definatly suggest making sure the infection is cleared first. Good thing though is they are usually easy to fix and common with cathaters even when they are done correctly. (i am assuming this is a folly cathater?).

I wish your family the best

You don't say what kind of cancer or what stage/virulence it is which determines the urgency of beginning chemo. It might be ok to postpone chemo until he finishes his antibiotic regimen. Also, antibiotics are sometimes necessary when on chemo because the chemo weakens the immune system. Just make sure you let the doctor know what he's on and for how long. Good luck and God bless!

The Oncologist will look at his labs the day the chemotherapy is supposed to start and determine whether or not he will be recieving the treatment.
Chemotherapy is never given to a sick person who has fever, sore throat, urinary tract infection, feeling bad, or having any complaints of physical illness.
Chemo is only for the healthy individual.
