Pope Benedict was a theological adviser to the Pope before he died. He participated in Vatican II as a secretary and theological adviser he was the only Cardinal that had the experience in Vatican II.When Cardinals came to visit or come to see the Pope when he was ill. He was the one that they would speak to. He took over many of the responsibility's that the Pope was not able to Carry out himself. The Cardinals felt that he was the obvious choice as to be the next in line to become Pope.
It was really a very obvious decision to me too.
But it was actually Pope John Paul II that dealt with this situation. At the time Pope Benedict was still Cardinal. But here is one article I found on the subject.

But being the right hand man I am sure he advised on this. But that is just speculation on my part.
Blessings to you

I'm not sure if you're trying to be negative or positive but Pope Benedict is completely against the whole homosexual and pedophile movement. I have actually heard the opposite. He wants to close seminaries that are knowingly producing these types. And don't be fooled. There is a huge homosexual movement to get gay men into the priesthood for the sole purpose of discrediting and destroying the church. That is a fact. The problem that they have that they don't realize is that Jesus Christ said, when He gave the Keys of the Kingdom to Peter that "...the gates of hell shall NOT prevail..."

He was also a close friend of John Paul 11 and it was believed that if chosen pope he would continue in the same vein that John Paul had taken during his papacy including handling the molestation issue.

I think that is likely untrue. The current council wanted longer to chose a long-term pope, and realized Benedict would not be in office very long.

Hey, we have similar avatars!
Nope, hadn't heard this one. Personally, though, my opinion on that scandal is that those priests should have been expelled from their positions in the church, stripped completely of their priesthood. Then let the US law take care of them.
Then again, I don't usually keep up with current events, so if this is what happened, please excuse my ignorance.

Sounds like you are spreading a rumor.
I don't think it's nice to pass on rumors of other people. How would you feel if someone said something this about you, for whatever successes you may have had?
While I do not believe in the apostolic succession doctrine, it still gives no one license to slander the man.

No I do not know of one. I suggest that you do your own search before posting questions that allege evil against somebody.
