I know someone who "hurt" themselves while in basic. He is now in the hospital, and I was just wondering what usually goes on with that. Do they send them home and thats it or is there a medical discharge?

They won't just kick you out on the spot. Military psychologists will conduct an interview and decide what happens from there. You're pretty much gone at that point, but they may decide there's more than meets the eye and you should remain in training.
Australian Army Recruit Training Center at Kapooka has a pleasant looking house where a full team from the Psychology Corps works, but the only way a recruit can see them is if they feel like harming themselves, so I'm pretty sure they're not just there to drum recruits out of the military. That'd be too expensive.

lets see; would you out a suicidle person back into training- if this person is going to be a defender of the country?
on the real- if it is a threat and not where you need medical attention- they'll put that person on "Suicide Watch" someone follows your EVERY move.
your "friend" could get what they call a "Failure to Adapt" discharge which is gen. a honorable discharge- but since it happened in basic it'll be a gen. discharge

he'll probably have to go to a med board, or atleat be reviewed by a phsycologist. It'll most likely be a lengthy process unfortunatly, as is the case with getting anyone out of the military. They probably won't treat him very good in the mean time either unfortunatly, they ussually make them wear an orange vest to classify him as a suicide atempter.

What a shame. He will spend the rest of his life trying to explain his discharge.
A medical discharge does not apply for self inflicted injuries.

ohhhhhhhhhh, no.....
My brother got turned down for the army because, when he was 14, he threatened to overdose on toothpaste. @__@ If your friend made a suicide attempt during basic training, he's out of the military for good.

he will be discharged and he will be permanently Disqualified form ever returning to any branch of the military.
It could take several weeks, however, before they send him home.

it all depends... im sure if he is in the army or something like that they might send him to see a head doc... then if he passes a head exam they might keep him... who knows though.. they might just send him home because they wouldnt want someone that has problems like that in the military... but if he really wants to stay in... im sure he will fight like hell to stay in....

Oh yeah, they'll get rid of him ASAP.
He will probably get some sort of medical discharge.
