This quote from "Confessions" reminds me of the first time I ate shrooms or dropped acid:

"And while we spoke of the eternal wisdom, longing for it and straining for it with all the strength of our hearts, for one fleeting instant we reached out and touched it. Then with a sigh, leaving our spiritual harvest bound to it, we returned to the sound of our own speech, in which each word has a beginning and an ending..."

I don't think anyone who has read Augustine would call his works "readable." They are pretty heavy going, I use them for when I need to fall asleep.

As for the quote, it could be just Augustine's way of taking Jesus up on His promise. He promised that those who seek Him will find Him. Augustine is describing his thirst for God in the first part. Once having thirsted after God, returning to the issues of this world seem small in comparison "each word has a beginning and an ending."

No. There was a guy named Callius who was more readable and more intelligent, but Augustine had his writings destroyed.

Augustine may have been wise in his own eyes. I find his writings too long-winded and much of his theology corrupt which has cause problems for millenia in the Christian community.

STICK WITH THE BIBLE INSTEAD OF AUGUSTINE.

Augustine, while often persuasively logical, was a guilt-ridden sort of fellow.
