So I'm going to buy a small 4x8 utility trailer. I'm planning on either buying one of the ones from harbor freight tools for $300, or buying a used one from a private party

I know there is some registration involved, and that they have to pass state patrol standards, and that I need plates/tabs, etc.

I have very little money to spend, so I'm worried about possibly buying a trailer, and then it costing a fortune to register.

So what steps do I need to go through with a private seller to ensure I can transfer it into my name without having to have it inspected, or jump through any other hoops?

Also, what about the brand new ones from harbor freight? If I buy one of those, can I simply pay a few bucks to get the license plate/tabs, or does it have to go through an inspection too?

I live in washington.

The trailers sold at Harbor Freight come with a Manufacturers Certificate of Origin. You take that and your receipt, and bill of sale to your DMV office, and apply for title and tags. If you buy a used trailer, make sure that it comes with a title!

Most states do not require a new trailer to be inspected, but this is not true of all. Many will require a used trailer to be inspected! Check with the DMV (or equivalent) in your state for the exact requirements!

I have registered trailers before and all I had to do was go down to the DMV and tell them what I needed the plate for there was no title fee or inspection on it. I live in Idaho

The trailers bought at domicile progression shops are actually not designed for heavy use. supply careful attention on your long term desires until eventually now you're making the acquisition. stable success.
