if man somehow contributes to his own salvation, it would follow that man himself gets the credit. and if man gets the credit, this certainly will detract from God's getting the credit. if it were possible to contribute something to attain heaven, then each person upon his arrival would be patting himself on the back because of what he did in order to obtain heavenly citizenship.
Any time someone thinks he can contribute, he is in essence working for his salvation, which is clearly against the Bible’s statements (see Ephesians 2:8-9). Even faith itself is a gift from God. Salvation is a free gift from God (Romans 6:23), and since it is a gift, there is nothing you can do to earn it. All you have to do is take the gift. "But to all who have received him (i.e., Jesus)—those who believe in his name—he has given the right to become God's children" (John 1:12).

Your question varies among different religions. I believe that one must be Babtised in the name of Jesus Christ. Being a "good person" doesn't cut it. The Pharisees where "Good People" but only in their mind. Jesus didn't have much good to say about the pharisees! True "righteousness" Only comes from God. Not man made traditions and devices.

Acts 4:12
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
Speaking of Jesus of course. This is the simplest way to explain to someone how we are saved...through the mighty name of Jesus. Our own works are nothing, all they do is strengthen our faith. But we are saved and justified through grace alone.
In Jesus Name
EDIT: for born again how about John 3:3
In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

None of us are guaranteed salvation. Heaven is not earned, but it is inherited as part of God's family through baptism and such. We must "stay the course" and remain faithful to God's commandments in order to be saved.
An official asked Jesus, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"...You know the commandments: Never commit adultery. Never murder. Never steal. Never give false testimony. Honor your father and your mother."...When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still need one thing. Sell everything you have. Distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me!" Luke 18:18,20,22

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Spiritually speaking, the Bible is the Word of GOD to mankind. And this word of GOD is the Bible as a story from its beginning called the Alfa and upto the Omega-the unending world created by THE LORD GOD-THE LORD JESUS CHRIST in human image for the sons of men becoming countless to countless gods or like-GOD in the coming Kingdom of GOD. Thus, the Alfa was during the coronation event of THE SPIRIT called THE BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD- in human image is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, made LORD and GOD by THE FATHER GOD-THE ANCIENT OF DAYS (likened to our Grandfather). THE SPIRIT AS BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER was birthed by THE MOTHER OF ALL, THE CITY OF GOD, THE HOLY CITY JERUSALEM (Gal 4:26; Rev 21:10-21) before our time began in celestial heaven. The ending of this story or the WORDS OF GOD to mankind is that our story is never ending story called the omega but in glorious and joyful realm. And this never ending story as a house is about the story of the House of Jacob of course with its members of the family as the main characters and its Father (the Groom) is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST and the wife is the glorious Church in human image is VIRGIN MARY-AS THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN and the house cornerstone is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST who by HIS CRUCIFIXION and death became the SAVIOR of all mankind; or as the story of a kingdom whose highest KING is the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS and the Queen is the Church and THE KING OF KINGS rules over this kingdom and HIS kings will rule from above their inherited kingdoms from the 120 billion galaxies in the universe in the Kingdom of Heaven and later among the countless to countless universes in the Kingdom of GOD ; or as the story of a tree whose root is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST and this tree lives in the realm of THE FATHER GOD WHO is the vinedresser and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS THE TREE that will grow forever and ever without end. This is the WORD OF GOD and its importance for the salvation of mankind and among other is beyond our perceptions. THUS, THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; PRAISE GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD. Pls visit my website-THEGOODNEWSOFTHEKINGDO...
