There are only 2 steps to becoming a Federal Judge in the US.
1. Nomination by the President.
2. Confirmation by the Senate.
Unless you are already a Judge at the state level, neither is likely to happen. Technically, you are not required to by an attorney. Practically, you won't be considered unless you are.
