If the point of having a lamp is to put light in a room, why would you shade the light? If it's too bright, how about a lower wattage bulb?

What looks better? A lampshade or a bare bulb just sitting there?

Not only are lamp shades generally more attractive than a bare light bulb, but they will either diffuse/soften the light making it more comfortable to the eye OR they will direct the light making it more appropriate to doing a task such as reading, writing, sewing, whatever.

It softens the light so it's not so intense. The only other way you can lessen the intensity is with a dimmer.
