I will be 16 in 1 week, I turn 16 on the 9th, and I LOVE animals. I want a job at a no kill animal shelter or something. But I have to buy everything for my dog and lizard, so I need to get paid. And so far, all the shelters etc only have volunteer positions. Nothing says apply for job or anything. I am in Dallas, TX. Please tell me if you know of a place that works with animals (if a shelter, only a no kill, I do now agree with shelters that euthanise animals, it would make me sick) I am not going to be picky with the amount of pay, I just need some money. THANK YOU

Have you considered learning to be a dog groomer? It takes a great deal of patience and it takes time to learn, but it's nto as stressful as a veterinarian's office (the animals you see aren't suffering) and you don't have to worry about things like euthenasia. Also, if you learn to do it and find you truly enjoy it, you can make a career of it! There is a high demand for skilled groomers all over the place.

Try applying for a job at a grooming salon as a bather/prepper. It's how most groomers start out. You learn the correct and most efficient way to bathe a dog, as well as the different coat types, breeds and how to care for each one. If you're into dogs, it's a great job...so long as you don't mind getting wet!

Also in my experience, working at small, privately-owned salons is infintely better than working for large, corporate companies like Petsmart. Check your phone book, call around or visit salons in your area. Look for a place that is clean, smells good when you walk in the door and that has staff that will answer all your questions. Good luck!

Vet Nurse is another good one to try, you dodnt really need to be a genius and get high marks at school and you dont need to go to uni for it. Just a Tafe course that I think is for around 3-4 yrs. Also you can get an apprentiship. This involves working with the animals and helping the Vet. Why dont you try your local vet clinic and see if you can do work experience there, you never know they might offer you an apprentiship. Another one perhaps might interest you is being a farm hand on a Dairy Farm, or even a sheep or beef farm. I Know a friend who works at a horse place, but he does the cleaning of the stable and maintenance. Hope that helps.

Most positions involving animals will not hire you unless you are at least 18 due to a bunch of liability stuff. If you want to work with animals then you will have to start by volunteering. It is the best step you can take toward a job with animals. Many places will not hire unless you have experience working with animals other than your own.
If you need to make money then seek a job elsewhere.

You could look for a position in any local pet lodges or kennels. I work at a pet resort and am constantly handling the dogs. Some places also have rescues so you can also help the strays. Sorry, I don't know about Dallas, but this is something you could try looking into. Hope this helps! :]

It's hard to get a job at a shelter that pays because they try to use all the money on the animals. You can get a good paying job walking dogs or dogsitting, though. Maybe you can spend some of your spare time volunteering....

I would suggest going to a place like PETCO or a place that grooms animals. There are always positions open at vet offices for people to clean kennels, walk dogs, clean and bathe animals. Your right though, the pay is not so good, but it may work into something better while you are there.

Hi...did you know that No Kill Shelters are authorized to give their animals over for lab testings after 30 days? It is thought they are better, but these people are not doing it just to kill an animal, it is thought that shelters that do euthanize are better, please research this as I know it for a fact...

When considering where to work, don't limit these shelters. YOU will not have to be putting them down, but you may be handing over a cute puppy or kitten to IAMS for electrical testing and a no kill shelter

I used to think like you about those shelter, and I learned about them and feel much better about the situation.

Most shelters DO only have volunteer positions.

Your best bet if you want to work with animals is to apply at a local Pet Supply Shop. (Not a pet store that sells puppies!!!--those dogs come from puppy mills with deplorable conditions)
