I am attempting to make chicken wings in my deep fryer..what temperature do i set it at?..I have a T-Fal Classic Fryer and I am not sure if i fry with the lid down once the chicken is in or what...This makes me very nervous of a fire..are these things safe?...and what do I do if a fire occurs in it?

It can be a bit scary using a fryer for the first time. But, to be honest, I wouldn't be without mine! They are useful for so many things, wings, donuts, fry's, battered Milkyways!!
You need to respect it, it is a dangerous appliance. As long as you don't do anything silly, like stick your fingers in it, leave the cable trailing, use it to near to the edge of the counter etc You will be fine.
Wings cook fairly quickly, 5 - 10 mins. I double dip mine for extra crispyness (flour and seasoning, then milk, then the flour and seasoning). If your fryer has in heating element hidden in the walls, I advise you to not use the basket, the wings sometimes stick to it. If the element is in the bowl, use the basket or else they may stick to the element (really messy to clean up!), hold onto the wing to let it "set", then slowly drop into the oil. Be careful!
I set my fryer at 360-375 degrees, I fry with the door shut, most fryers have a filter built in, so it cuts down on the nasty smell. Don't forget to drain on kitchen towel. I cook lots at a time but we all eat together, so, I end up having to keep them warm, I do this by heating the oven to it's lowest setting and put them on a cookie tray in a single layer. You want them to keep warm, not go soggy nor to keep on cooking!
I am British and cooking wings is a fairly new concept to me, my American husband taught me how to do it and I customized it. All my American relatives and friends say mine is the best they have ever had!

Donuts need to be deepfried ie. you cannot shallow fry in a frying pan. However you don't necessarily have to use an electric deep fat fryer. All you need is a sufficiently large and deep saucepan. Fill in enough oil to come one-third up the sides (as per Fire and Safety Departments recommendation) . Not having an electric deep fat fryer with a thermostat means that you will have to keep a watchful eye on the pan and continually monitor its heat. When you think it may have come up to sufficent temperature drop in a small amount of your batter and see how fast it comes up to the surface. If it remains submerged for fairly long, then the oil is probably not yet hot enough. Take great care while frying your donuts and removing them from the hot oil. Most accidents can happen when the oil catches fire. So if you are vigilant and take your time accidents can be avoided. NOTE: Electric deep fat fryers are pretty cheap. If you plan to deep fry stuff on a more regular basis I would advise that you buy one. It's way safer!

For this fried chicken recipe, you will need to find at your local grocery store chicken wingettes. If you have never used these before, they are basically chicken wings that have already been separated for you. This fried chicken recipe is actually a duplicate of the famous "buffalo wings".

You want fully cooked chicken to work with before you start on thie fried chicken recipe. Take each piece of chicken and fry in a deep fryer until chicken floats. No breading is neccessary. Once all chicken is cooked, heat a pan of half butter and half hot sauce. Fry your chicken in the pan on both sides. The longer you cook it the more spicey the chicken will be.

**Make sure it is on 360 Degrees F

i really don't mean to be a smart@ss here but try reading the directions that came with the fryer...all of them are just different enough that it's a must to do so...i only say this because you are right, serious injury and damage can occur and if you've ever seen anyone with hot oil burns( the answer is yes i have) you'd know it ain't a pretty sight, having said that I use my FRY DADDYs all the time and have never had an issue...good luck and good cooking

i been cookin for bout 8 years, 350 degrees is almost/ most likely the best temperature for deep fryers and if the wings r fresh raw i say bout 8-12 minutes depending on the size of them. for fire issue keep it away from outlets as much as possible. with the lids not so sure but if u have it on watch out for steam cuz its probably the worst kind of burn u can get trust me ouch!! but u should be ok

fry at 375 and yes close the lid. It wil splatter but with the lid closed it will be okay. Just make sure you dont overfill it with oil. there should be a fillline inside the fryer

www.foodnetwork.com is a *great* site for good recipes and instructions on stuff like this. 350F is the temperature you want.

Generally you don't deep fry with a cover. That would tend to send condensation back into the oil causing popping and splattering.

Yeah, they're safe.

If a fire happens, unplug and grab your all-purpose fire extinguisher: baking soda and sprinkle over hte fire

Do not fry under a cabinet or anything... on a cookie sheet under a hood vent set on "ON" is great.

For chicken wings, I'd set it to about 350-360ºF.... do not crowd the wings in there or the temp will drop too low to cook them properly and they will come out greasy.

Now, conquer your fears and get to frying! :-)

they are safe.
don't put too much oil in it.
keep a fire extinguisher handy.
remeber the # for 911 is 911
your chicken should come with a little label or instructions for the temp to cook at.
and yeah cover it with the lid so you don't splash grease on your kitchen and/or self

remember to drain them well and set them on paper towels to soak up more oil before eating.

check the book. theres usually recipes in there. also when its at the right temp make sure your wings are covered in water....for better flavor and they cook better.
