This is how webmd.com says to remove a tick:
-Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove a tick. If you don't have tweezers, put on gloves or cover your hands with tissue paper, then use your fingers. Do not handle the tick with bare hands.
-Grab the tick as close to its mouth (the part that is stuck in your skin) as you can. The body of the tick will be above your skin.
-Do not grab the tick around its bloated belly. You could push infected fluid from the tick into your body if you squeeze it.
-Gently pull the tick straight out until its mouth lets go of your skin. Do not twist or "unscrew" the tick. This may separate the tick's head from its body and leave parts of its mouth in your skin.
-Put the tick in a jar filled with rubbing alcohol and save it for later identification if necessary.
It also says to watch out for signs of infection including:
-Pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the area.
-Red streaks leading from the area.
-Pus draining from the area.
-Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin.
-Fever or chills.
If you have a rash, headache, joint pain, fever, or flu-like symptoms, this could mean you have an illness related to a tick bite. If you have any of these symptoms, or symptoms of a skin infection, call your doctor.
Hope this helps.

It is VERY important that you remove the head of the tick - not just the body. Some people think they can just pull the tick out - but this usually leaves the head embedded in the dog. Burning the tick with a lighted cigarette also is pretty useless as well as dangerous. Coating it with vaseline has never been effective in my house either.

To successfully remove a tick - swollen or newly attached, have available forceps or tweezers, a needle - either a sewing needle or a #25 needle (for a syringe,) and a bit of alcohol or betadine or some other antiseptic within reach.
I stand the dog on the grooming table, and grip the tick's body GENTLY (so it doesn't squish :-) with the forceps or the tweezer.

Then, insert the point of the needle UNDER the head, where it's dug in and lift up some flesh with the needle.
(lifting the body slightly with the forcep helps to find the point of insertion.) The dog will not object to this pin prick and slight 'digging' to release the tick's mouth.

When you have loosened the head of the tick this way, gently pull the body BACK with the forceps and the tick will come out with a piece of flesh still visible in it's mouth.

Swab the area with disinfectant using a Q-tip or a cotton ball.
I keep an old spice jar on the grooming table filled with alcohol, and I drop the tick from the forceps right into the alcohol, put the lid back on and it eventually dies in the bottle.

If you still have the head of the tick embedded in the dog, then apply warm salt water soaks to soften it a bit so you can squeeze it out. You may have to open it up first with a needle, then squeeze it out - like a sliver. Put a little disinfectant into the area, give the dog a treat and get on with your day!

Preferably wear latex or other gloves, and using a fine point forceps (tweezer) pinch the head of the tick and pull gently. Don't squeeze the body of the tick. Keep the traction for several minutes and the tick will back out. Kill and dispose of tick. Wash wound with antibacterial soap.
Dispose your gloves. Wash your hands well.

Covering with Vaseline, or applying a hot match tip are fraught with failure and may cause the tick to regurgitate more harmful material into the wound.

I never pull on ticks. You can squeese the blood right back in, and now it's mixed with bug juice.

The tick will let go quickly if it senses heat. So .. heat a sewing needle or tweezers .. something metal that will hold the heat long enough for the tick to get the point. (point? hahaha .. I crack me up ..)

You'll need something to hold the needle or tweezers, because the heat will transfer to your hand and it'll hurt. I usually use a needle and a pair ir needle nosed pliers.. hold the needle over a lighter ir candle till it's hot, apply to the tick and watch him back away. Once he's let go, scoop him up with tissue or paper towel.

you need tweezers and some nail polish remover. take the remover on a piece of cotton or whatever you have and soak the cotton and place it on the tick.the tick will have a hard time breathing and will slowly back away from your scalp.when that happens take the tweezers a pull him out. when done use some alcohol to clean the area. good luck

light a match and let it burn for a second, blow it out, then touch the hot match head to the tick, it will kill it and it will release and you can pull it out easily.

or soak a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and soak the tick in the alcohol until it dies, then pull it out. this takes longer than the match head one, but you dont have to worry about it hurting you.

the key is to kill the tick, so it releases before you try to pull it out.

good luck!

1. Smother it with olive oil or Vaseline
2. Hold a flame to it's butt (but watch your hair)
3. Twist it out counter clockwise with a pair of tweezers.
