OK... to get more resistance, you can get a bigger chainring for the crank, or a smaller fixed gear on the back.

To make the wheels spin faster and longer, there are a few things.
1. upgrade the hubs.. Muchos important, as they make your wheels spin.
2. lighter tires. Makes more of a difference than you think, because the weight of the tire has to go around and around. A folding tire, perhaps with a kevlar bead would be good ($$$)
3. uprgrade the bottom bracket. this will make spinning the crank smoother.

Just one thing might only make a small difference, but together, they will improve the performance of the bike.

Improve your fitness level.....

Theoretically, you would need to look at your tires and wheels (more specifically, the hubs). Different tires have different rolling resistance, specially in mountain bike tires.

Some hubs are smoother than others (probably), but I don't think you would notice an increase in speed by using super duper hubs than good ones.
