Is it a lack of belief of God or a lack of belief in religion? I know the dictionary definition, but I’ve seen conflicting Atheist views on here. Is it the same in Atheism as it is in Christianity...different sects of Atheism?

I prefer not to label things Q. All I know is that when I die my body will eventually break down and thats it. Game Over. Whatever Webster defines it as is not accurate for everyone.

Atheism: is the lack of belief in any deity (or god). A- is a Greek prefix meaning "without" and theos means "god", so when put together with the suffix -ism ("belief"), it means "belief without god." The opposite of atheism is theism.

Some people describe two kinds of atheism - weak atheism and strong atheism.

Weak atheism is the belief that there is no reason for a god to exist. Someone who is a weak atheist does not believe in any god he or she knows about. He or she does not expect to believe in any god he or she hears about. Weak atheists may also be open to the idea that there is some driving force that keeps the universe in motion but that force is not a divine being.
Strong atheism is the belief that there can be no such thing as a god. Some use arguments that it would not be possible for there ever to be a god. For example, some say that it is not possible for any being to know everything.
Atheism is not a body of belief in itself. It's just a lack of any belief in a deity.

Atheism is, in the broadest definition possible, the lack of a belief in a higher power.

Atheism is not an organized religion, there are no sects. Everybody has their own opinions. All that atheists have in common is that one lacking belief. That's all. There are atheist organizations, but it is not organizing atheism per se, but atheist causes.

Atheism == (A) (Theism ) == (Without ) ( God Belief )

Belief in X means estimating the probability of X being true as greater than 50%

Trying to define "God" is the tricky part. That is left as an exercise for the reader.

The only defining characteristic that a person must have to be considered an Atheist is the belief that God does not exist.

Apart from this single uniting belief, atheists may believe whatever they see fit or logical. Many atheists disagree on various issues. Some believe in evolution, others do not. Some believe in spirituality without religion, others do not. We are very diverse and do not always get along!

Someone who does not believe in organised religion is generally considered to be an 'antitheist'.

Did that help?

While I have never done research I was under the impression that the base meaning of atheist was simply the lack of faith in a higher being/force(that’s what I define myself as anyway). I believe those that believe in some higher force but do not attach it to any particular religion are called deists or agnostic. I would imagine that there are several different variations of this however, we all think differently.

There are no Atheist sects, sorry but that is just silly. Atheists do not believe in god(s). We also for the most part, do not believe in the supernatural or paranormal either. A person who does, or is not sure, or thinks we are some kind or energy beam, is an Agnostic. Or a space cadet.

No. Atheism means the lack of belief in a supreme being(s).
Nothing else.

Lack of belief in any gods. Not specific gods, and not belief in religion, since that obviously exists.

Lack of belief in any god(s).

We know religion exists. Not believing that religion exists is, well, just plain silly.
