I have 4 dogs. A Great Dane, 2 Rat Terriers and a Border Collie. The Great Dane has seperation anxiety and is deaf. He has to constantly be with me all the time and gets VERY anxious when I close doors on him (if I go outside, go to the bathroom etc..). I feel like my life has to revolve around him all the time. Its a relief when he's not here (at my moms house for instance). With my other dogs I don't feel as gulity leaving them for long periods of times (6-8 hours). I feel like I should rush home everyday from work to get back to him or not stay out late cause he'd be alone too long. I work 6 hour days so i'm not gone for very long. Am I the only one that feels this way? Gulity about leaving my dogs alone for too long or that they are bored all the time? Any idea's how to get over it or if I should? thanks

I'd take him to dog day care if he wasn't 100% dog agressive or if I had the money to do so. They stay out in the garage with access to part of the backyard since they dig under the fence and the dane pushes the pannels out to try and attack the neighbor dog.

Your dog has plenty of companionship with the other dogs in the house. You are inadvertently reinforcing this behavior by rewarding your dog with your attention when he behaves this way. (And I'm not being critical -- I give into my dogs too!)

I have two dogs, that are frequently at home alone with eachother (and the cats) for 12 hours a day, due to a long commute. I used to worry about them, but I borrowed a friends video camera and taped them one day. What I found was them playing with eachother and napping. The 'I'm lonely act' that they do when I leave stops as soon as my car is out of sight! I no longer feel guilty about leaving them!

yep i agree with the other girl, doggy day care would probably be a great thing for him, if he is well tempered with other dogs, but i would not worry too much about him, dogs are more resilent than we think they are. Do you have a fenced in yard? so that you could put him out with the other dogs while you are gone, or you could turn the TV On animal planet, some dogs actually like the tv on when no one is at home with them. Good Luck hun, and stop stressing so much, it will be fine.
