I think this answer really depends on the christian you ask. The chosen wraths of God are a mysterious side to God that many Christians fear and shy away from. I am certain that there is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ, baptism or no baptism. The bible (the book Christians base their faith on) teaches that people are only made compatible with God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and many Christians believe that Baptism is the only way this can be achieved. That's why some Christians say that those who have not been baptized are going to hell. But there is a truth about the bible in which I am certain. There are some people that did not know Jesus personally or consciously, but who never the less, went to Heaven. Not Hell, not even limbo, but Heaven! We know of "old testament" saints that shall be in heaven, and the bible implies that several of these individuals weren't even Israelites. (Example: Noah, Job, Melchizedek). The most logical explanation about these is that the saving grace of Jesus can embrace more then just those that are consciously aware of it. God judges people according to their hearts and how they responded to his divine plan; it is not Christians that decide who shall be in heaven or hell regardless of how "holy" they appear to be. Unfortunately, these bible stories are not the ones that are most often told during a typical Sunday christian sermon.

In the beginning, when Adam and Even walked in Eden with God, it was designed so that ALL would go to heaven.
Hell was not made for people, but for the devil and his demons out of their act of rebellion towards God.
When Adam and Eve sinned, it took them (and later generations) away from God and into a place of rebellion from Him.
Let's say for a moment "Limbo" does exist where everyone when they die goes. This would last for only so long, as God says He will come again to judge the living AND the dead.
You said: "but can not accept something that their intellect rejects as ludicrous"
We, in the seemingly complex brains that we do have, cannot even come within a tenth of grasping the intricat nature of God, and if we are going by "intellect" alone as to what we believe, we are sorely to be disappointed.
You also said: "burn in hell for eternity is just so clearly NOT the act of a loving god."
If we are limited in our thought process as to God and His nature, how can we judge that act IS not that of a loving God? What more are we to expect when He sent the answer to our dilemma in the form of His Son, nearly 2 thousand years ago?
You said:"Why are christians so hell bent on atheists burning in hell rather than putting forth a slightly more civil option like limbo"
For every problem we have, God gives us a solution. That solution is salvation.
We cannot choose "options". We either take it or leave it.
Being born into sin and rebellion against God was not a choice on our part, but choosing salvation is something we have control over.
To say that someone's "intellect which rejects a belief" cannot accept salvation is a weak excuse for not wanting to admit that a person is not capable of saving themself or controlling their destiny.
I honestly do not understand why people reject salvation so vehemntly, after all, what have you got to lose?

I think Limbo was a Catholic idea -- you should note that the Vatican just recently abandoned it as likely to be untrue. It's no longer a part of the doctrine.
Anyway, I know that wasn't your point, so I'll move on. I am of agreement on this issue -- I really don't think all atheists are headed to Hell. I'm really not sure who *is* that far removed from God to be deserving of an eternity of punishment! It's not for any human to decide things like this.

First things first ... there is no limbo. A baby or child who dies before the "age of reason" will most certainly go to heaven. That is the sign of a loving God. It gets a little hairier after a point in time when you can think for yourself.
Then God says "choose me" or rather, "trust me" that I am your only path to salvation (through Jesus Christ). Good works aren't good enough, lest any man should boast, as the bible puts it. You need to understand that you can't get to heaven on your own. To say you can is to reject God, and that most certainly will lead to the lake of fire, which is what most people refer to as hell.
Your intellect stands in the way of your faith in God.

No sir!
Limbo was a place where Good souls had to wait for Christ to open the Gates of Heaven.
Maybe you are talking about purgatory...yes?
I have been here all day and I have seen no Christian here condemning atheists to hell; you just want to start a fight,,,yes???
Now GO AWAY.

Limbo is bad. Your soul has nowhere to go. "Limbo" was actually not used anymore because random souls would try to enter a body of a living soul so therefore they get sent one way or another.

There is no such thing as limbo, purgatory and the likes. Either you have eternal life or you do not. In order to have eternal life then you have to believe that Christ died for your sins and come to God through him. If you are a nonbeliever then well you know the answer to your question.Eternal life can not be yours.
