My grandma is in a nursing home in Ohio and I live in Minnesota. I get down to visit her every other month or so and would like to know good gifts to give her either in the mail or in person.

So far I have given her recent pics of my brother and I, and I go out to eat with her when I am there, and we have also gone shopping and got her some new clothes and other things she needed.

Any other ideas? Thank you so much everyone!!

A few things about my gma - she is wheelchair bound (she can stand to move from wheelchair to bed or car tho) and she has a hard time figuring things out. She can use her tape player so she is given books on tape and loves those. She doesn't have much room, its quite small and she shares it with someone else. She can eat anything so I buy her candy always :) Thanks for all the ideas so far!!

If she's still able to write and correspond with family, how about some pretty stationary, an address book with family addresses already entered in neatly and in large print and a book of stamps?

Another thing she might enjoy would be fruit, when my grandfather was in the nursing home, he would wait expectantly for my mother's visits because she would bring him more bananas and oranges. He loved having his own fruit that he could snack on when hungry rather than having to wait for scheduled meal times...

A good pair of warm slippers with very sturdy soles and good treads would be appreciated during the winter, Ohio winters can get chilly and the floors of nursing homes can be very cold even if the place is well heated.

All in all, what I'm sure your grandma appreciates the most is just your company! Maybe next time you go to see her, take a portable tape recorder along and have her tell you stories from her childhood or how she met your grandfather or what it was like for her to raise her kids....that family history will be your gift from her long after she's gone, something you'll always be able to treasure!

Sometimes the people in nursing homes get kind of childish and like to compete. It is considered a biggie when a resident receives a package from a child or grandchild. So you can be sure your grandma would appreciate everything.

I am not sure what is available to your grandmother there, but if she likes candy, that is always a good gift and usually something not served there. It is a nice gift too because your grandma might like to be able to treat her friends too.

I often see many stuffed animals in residents rooms at nursing homes. I don't know if this is because the people like them or if that is just what people bring them for gifts.

It is nice to see people paying attention to elderly relatives for a change. Bless you.

Make sure it is OK with her doc before letting her have candy. Fresh fruit is a great idea, too, as long as her doc approves. The staff can tell you about her food service orders.
Pictures usually cheer the residents up. Nice smelling shampoos and soaps for the staff to use on her hair and body is great, especially is it is formulated for older hair and skin. If she doesn't have breathing problems, nice smelling powders for after her baths are good. Since she is wheel chair bound, you might want to consider going to an online (or brick and mortar) healthcare supply store to see if there are chair pads or things like that for her. Sometimes wheel chair patients can have problems with ulcers forming on their hineys. Anything to help prevent that is good for the resident and the staff.
Be careful you don't purchase anything too expensive if theft is a problem there.
It's so sweet that you are thinking of her. Good luck and best wishes.

I oftentimes see many filled animals in citizens rooms at nursing homes. i don't recognize if it fairly is by technique of the fact the folk like them or if it is purely what human beings deliver them for presents. it fairly is magnificent to work out human beings paying interest to elderly kin for a transformation. Pictures for the walls, plants, little knick-knack shelves. These are the type of gifts that my Grandma liked when she was in the nursing home. Another thing that she really liked was when I visited her I would do her nails for her. I would go all out and give her a full manicure.

If she can see, how about a cross word puzzle book or word find puzzle book. Or a CD player? You can get candles that run on batteries that look like candles and some even smell good too. If she can write, writing paper and envelopes and stamps. If she can have candy, get her some hard candy like pepermints or butterscotch. Women love stuffed animals. A small plant.

As in so and so came to see me. They love it. They don't want expensive stuff they want meaningful things , from the heart.
