I am a Marine Corps and Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran. I was injured in OIF and was received a %70 disability rating. I still have a scar and was wondering if the veterans affairs will do a cosmetic surgery seeing as how it was from injuries sustained during a combat operation. Though I appreciate all answers please only answer if you have a certain answer and no "I guesses" or "I think", thanks!

I work at a VA also and yes we do do cosmetic surgery. It depends on the type, reason for the surgery and need. All VAs have different programs, therefore they perform different services. Working at a training hospital, we do many surgeries that are classified as elective and cosmetic. The best advise I can give you is to contact your service representative and have him put you in contact with a social worker at the closest VA to you. They then can find out if any of the VAs would consider doing the surgery you are requesting. You can also call the benefits office at 1-800 827 1000(in Michigan) for the telephone number of your service representative. If you are in another state, just contact your local VA hospital for the telephone numbers.

I'm sorry to hear about your injuries and thank you for your service. I work at a VA hospital. I am actually an Administrative Assistant for the department of Surgery at the VA where I work. The answer to your question is no. The VA does not do any kind of cosmetic surgery. But if your injury was sustained during combat and you are service connected for the injury you have a good chance of being fee based out in the community where you live to have cosmetic surgery. I hope this helps.

I don't know of any VA facilities that offer cosmetic surgery at the VA. You would have to go to an outside provider for that. In your case, I doubt the VA would pay for it. I've seen guys walking around the VA without a noses on their faces. You would think that the VA would provide reconstructive surgery for them but it doesn't. If they can't get it to replace a nose, then you probably won't be able to get it to remove a scar.

Sorry.

Thank you for Serving. There are plastic surgeons who donate the time and skills to help disadvantaged children, you might find one willing to help Veterans of OIF, There are a lot of people out there who Support our Troops, you might have to pay a little something or nothing give contacting some a try and Good Luck.
