So last week I walked/jogged 3 miles a day Mon-Sat. in two different sessions, each about 40 min. I would walk til the urge to run would hit me.

Near the end of the week I was running more, and my calf muscles would tense up something bad. When that happened I'd just walk, kind of stretching my leg out behind me as I did.

I do stretch a bit before I go on, not so much after, and always walk at least 5-10 minutes before running.

Today I had to stop running because it hurt and I was afraid. Am I doing something wrongly? Why do my calf muscles (and knees) hurt now? Should I cut down running to 3 days a week?

If you can answer any of those, thanks!

If you're just starting, you should start slow and gradually build up your distance. Try starting by running just a few times a week, then add more days. It is important to stretch after you run, and if you're going to stretch before you run, do a bit of a warm up first, like jogging for 5 minutes.

Apart from arthritis and damage, knee problems almost always stem from being in the wrong shoes.
Notice how you wear out your shoes unevenly (see the link below for details)
The solution is to go a specialist running shop for a gait analysis and shoe fit.

Yes, stretch :-)

REST DAYS - start With 2 days on 1 day off. Slowly increase increase the number of on days between off days. But never stop taking off days, the pros have them as well!

Marcy's got some good points.

1. You need to stretch before and after. If you walk a long time first, stop and stretch before you run.

2. Check out your shoes to make sure they are in good shape and right for your feet.

It could just be that your calves aren't strong enough to take the running. Have you been running for a long time?
