The front armor of an abrams is almost immune to front attack from most shaped charge weapons the insurgents have. The reason the front armor is so strong is that how tanks are designed to fight in battle, frontal attacks. The bad thing is is when you get into a situation where attacks can come from the top and sides or a roadside bomb. The new abrams are being upgraded with stronger side and rear armor and they figure abrams damage will go down 90%. 80 to 90 abrams have been destroyed mainly by ieds in iraq before the new armor, and none have ever been destroyed by an enemy tank. Abrams with reactive armor can resist even more damage from shaped charge weapons.

Absolutely. There are pictures on the internet of the Marine M1 Abrams tank that ran over a 5,000LB bomb which blew the turret off, killed the gunner, loader, and the tank commander. The driver survived with severe injuries.
