This is my question because we see pictures of girls today (i.e.- nicole riche, mary-kate(ashley?) ) that are super skinny and are accused with having anorexia....so WHY. i DO NOT understand why this is. anorexia is supposed to equal bone skinny, yet i also see kids in africa who are starved and are bloated!

so would they also be considered anorexic?

PLEASE! help me understand! is there a difference? they both aren't eating? why does one bloat and the others don't???

It's because there are 2 different conditions. Anorexia is the abstaining from all food.

Children from Africa are suffering from a condition called Kwashiorkor, which is a disease that is characterized by decreased protien metabolism due to inadequate protien intake. This disease usually hits children when they are weaned off of their mother's breast milk before they are old enough to start eating meat. So they are sufficing off of pure carbohydrates.

So what ends up happening is the body begins to take protien out of the visceral (body organ) compartment for general metabolic purposes. What ends up happening is organ most directly affecte is the liver, which begins to fill with fat and ends up swelling to cause the abdomen to swell.

Okay, so basic sum up to your questions. Anorexics take protien out of the muscles while kids who have kwashiorkor take protien out of the organ area. So while they both aren't eating, they both have two different disease manifestations.

I wondered this too. The prisoners in the WW2 camps did not look bloated, they looked like a rack of bones. Yet the starving third world children have bloated stomachs. I wonder what causes the stomach to be bloated also?

Abdomen - swollen

* Overview
* Treatment

Definition:

A swollen abdomen is when your belly area is bigger than usual.

See: Abdominal girth
Alternative Names:
Swollen belly; Swelling in the abdomen; Abdominal distention; Distended abdomen
Considerations:

Abdominal distention is a common condition, which usually results from over-eating, rather than from a serious illness. Simple weight gain , premenstrual syndrome (PMS) , pregnancy, or the unconscious swallowing of air can also cause distention.

Abdominal distention is often caused by intestinal gas. This may result from eating fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables. Legumes such as beans are common sources of intestinal gas. People who are lactose intolerant cannot properly digest dairy foods, and eating such foods may cause distention.

Abdominal distention may also occasionally result from the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, which can be a sign of serious medical problems. There are usually other symptoms in this case.

the children seem bloated on the grounds that they dont have any meals to consume for many years, so the frame does not have any fats to make use of for heat and different services bought from meals. so their stomache's bloat from loss of meals and enzymes and different stuff

anorexia causes constipation because you dont get enough nutrients including dietary fiber) which leads to bloating.
kids in africa dont have laxatives and diuretics to take for bloating comparing to people in the usa.

The anorexics that you see are retards, and they don't bloat because they still drink water. The starving children in Africa bloat because their internal organs are being squeezed, and the remaining water in their bodies have to protect them. Of course there is a difference from being a retarded anorexic, and being starved because the African government is too greedy to help them.
