Well first, I know right from wrong. That is the first essential thing. There are alot of things out there that I may want, but are they right. Do I really need those things. Probably not.
Next, I've starting going by a philosophy of I'm going to do this, I think it is right, stop me if its not! I think this is one of many means to following God's plan. Of course the first being when God directly lays something on your heart to do. This is where I fail the most b/c most of the time it is something you do not necessarily want to do. lol. Anyway....back to my first point.
If there is something I would like or would like to do, basically say to the Lord, I'm going to pursue this. If it is your will, I will pursue this and obtain my goal; otherwise, please intervene in my life and stop me or direct me in the direction I should going. I think it works.

Psalm 37 - God grants the desires of the heart, we have to surrender to Him, sometimes you can't control the outcome no matter how hard you try, and we should always look to God even when we can control the outcome...
To answer the bolded Question. I hope that my needs and wants line up with God's palns for me...

I do not desire anything that He does not will for me.
Sure, I would love to win Publishers Clearing House, but that has not been in God's will for me. I would not want it for myself, but there are so many people that I would like to help that I am not able to help. However God knows that I would spend a small part of it on new things for the wife and me.
He provides me all that I need, and I do not want for more.

Your question is a very complicated one. However, you must first surrender ALL to God. Jesus (Yahshuaha) said that if you wish to follow him you must denying yourself. Put everything into his hands and you won't have to worry about any of your needs because God will supply all of your needs.YOU must decrease as He increases in your life. God wishes are more important than our needs. He knows what is best for you better than you or anyone else. He holds the future in His hands. YOU must adjust your desires, wants, and needs to HIS will. If you stay in the center of His will he will bless you with the desires of your heart so long as they are in accordance with His ways. Second, you must learn the ways of God. Find His purpose for you and walk in it. This may be done through much studying but most importantly through prayer and sometimes fasting. Fasting can be done without starving yourself of physical foods. Fasting is simply the process of denying oneself, so it can be done by cultivating one self spiritually, by avoiding all sources of negativity, limiting one's conversations to topics that involve righteousness.

Only by the Word of God:
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

We all fight these same conflicts. But I think the Bible verse that quotes Jesus: "Not my will but Thine be done" (Matt. 26:39) makes it very clear how we are to pray.
I believe that we are to pray for our will to be aligned with His. That is what I do for every major happening in my life. Of course, we are to use our God-given wisdom to make choices in our day to day lives.
I wish you well.

I don't think God wants you to do that. He has created you with desires and needs and he knows those desires better than you do. Maybe he wants you to use your wants and needs to serve his purposes.

Prayer and meditation. Regular Scripture reading. And - in your prayer life, ask for wisdom and a daily infilling of the Holy Spirit. Things will become more clear.

Well I think you should pray and ask God to direct you. That is most important thing you can do unless the Bible directly adresses your desires or wants.
