For a beginner you multiply the club by 10 then the difference to make 200 yards is what you can expext with a good swing and with good contact.
2 iron times 10 = 20 yards. You have 180 yards left to make 200 so you should be able to hit the 2 iron 180 yards
5 iron times 10 = 50 yards ... so expect to hit the 5 iron 150 yards
9 iron time 10 = 90 yards .. so expext 110 yards.
For the woods just figure 200 or more yards.

Roughly starting with a 7-iron = 150 yards. Add/sub 15 yards per club. For example, an 8-iron would = 135 yards; 6-iron = 165 yards.

10-15 yards should be average difference in iron shots. If you're ever "stuck inbetween" clubs....try hitting a draw with the more lofted iron. Draw can give you an extra 5-10 yards when hit properly (not taking into account, role, wind etc) If you don't want to hit it as far....try hitting a fade. Same principle as with the draw....it can actually slightly reduce your overall distance....ever so slightly. Good luck with your Game. Hope this helps!

Most people have about a 10-yard difference between clubs. For instance, I hit my 7-iron about 155, and my 8-iron about 145.

$50 isn't going to get you far, I'm afraid. Here are some ideas to help you find something: * Ask your coach and teammates for help tracking some down. * Check your local classifieds (newspapers & Craiglist) for equipment as well as yard/estate sales with "golf" in their descriptions. * Visit local sporting goods shops - Play It Again Sports is a national chain that may be a good place to poke your head into. I would avoid eBay. If you don't know much about what you want or how to spot fake clubs, you may well end up getting burned. You may want to check prices online at discount shops like Rock Bottom Golf, but make sure you ask your coach/teammates before buying anything to ensure you get what you need and are getting a deal. Best of luck!

Most people will average a 10 - 20 yd differential between clubs. their distance with any club will be dependent upon club head speed and quality of contact. There is no actual average as clubhead speed differs with every golfer. Also I have been playing golf for 45 yrs and a swing coach for the last 15.....I have never seen the formula that Tbone posted earlier...Nor would I place any stock in it what so ever!

I figure 165 for a five iron for me, and 135 for an eight iron. Pros will go 200 with a six.
