It doesn't hurt. Matter of fact, they did it to me too. The urine is less likely to be contaminated when they take it using a catherter. I promise you it doesn't hurt at all.

When being catheterized, its a more sterile procedure & the urine is taken directly from your bladder. She is trying to rule out her suspicions of it being bacteria from your skin making it look like you have a UTI.

Local anesthetic? Come now, she will not use a garden hose to get urine from you, the catheter will probably not even be as large as your urethra. This is a simple procedure & may only cause very VERY very slight discomfort.

Just be glad that you're not a woman that has to have PMS, cramps that have you doubled over in pain, bleed for a week EVERY month, squeeze something the size of a medium watermelon out of something the size of a lemon (childbirth) OH and lets not forget the yearly visit where you're spread eagle with your feet up in stirrups while having a large set of tong like instruments spreading your stuff then scraping around in there.... yeah, uh, I would be a guy and take a catheter on ANY DAY!

Suck it up & find out what is really going on with your health, it's such a small price to pay! I just thought of something... I can only imagine the look on your face the first time your doctor checks your prostate! Turn your head to the left & cough! LMAO

Good luck!

To be truthful, you will feel irritation. It isn't like you never knew it was there. Women have short urethras which is good in that the catheter does not need to be inserted as far to get urine.

An urine sample from catherization is much less likely to be contaminated by skin bacteria.

Catheterization allows for a "cleaner" specimen. Meaning the sample will come straight from your bladder and give her a clearer picture of what is going on. Also you don't need an anesthetic to be catheterized. You will be fine. It's not the most pleasant experience but there are a lot of worse things.

If bacteria from your skin is affecting the specimen you provide, the only way to tell is to take urine directly from the bladder.

Possibly she feels that is the only way of getting a true sample to test. Apparently you've had this problem for a while or you wouldn't have been refer-ed to a urologist.

probably wants to catch the urine before it hits your skin. you already said she suspects bacteria from your skin.
