I have read that passports are required if you fly. I would be driving to Canada. There is going to be a change, however, in 2008 where everyone entering and leaving will need passports. I want to take the kids with me too.

You can drive until January with a certified birth certificate and government photo ID; kids do just need birth certificates but if you aren't traveling with the other parent you will need notorized permission from that parent or a court order showing your sole custody.

the Washington state border station, requires a driver's license and a certified birth certificate for id to return to the country.

Birth certificates and another form of picture ID for adults and, if the children are yours, I think you just need their birth certs.
