It depends on the size of your cake. I have a 12x9x6 cake and the bottom part alone serves about 70 people...so yes they do serve a lot of people, just depends on what size you do your cake in. The sheet cake is just a cheaper way to go, but a tier cake can serve plenty of people, definately 100.

Several tiers will serve 100 easily...but you can always get a smaller tiered cake and have a sheetcake in the back ready to be served, that way you can save the top tier if you want and don't have to have guests wait between cutting and serving, plus sheet cakes are much cheaper.

It really depends on what you need. The person doing your cake will tell you how much each tier feeds, and you can decide from there.
If you want to save money, then buy a small pretty "wedding cake" that is decorated the way you want and serve your guests sheet cake in the same flavor.
my cake serves 100 and it is 3 tiers.12"8"6' all together stacked. we are also having a small groom's cake that will feed around 25 people.

Of course there's enough to serve all of your guests! Since you custom order it, you simply tell the baker how many people you need to feed, and they make it big enough!
Sometimes, people do get sheet cakes as a less expensive option. It's also not uncommon for people to rent faux cakes, that are made out of foam, but have a special spot for the bride & groom to cut into it. The guests are then served from a standard sheet cake that's in the kitchen (no one watches the staff cut the cake, anyway, so who'd ever notice?).

Most people will get a fancy tiered cake for the cutting and then a sheet cake made in the same flavor for serving to the guests. Traditionally the bride and groom get the smallest, top tier to take home, freeze and eat together on their first anniversary.

Well, even if your baker makes it for 100=- those are VERY small pieces. You can ask the baker to make it for 150 people, and tell the caterer to cut larger pieces for your guests. OR, you can do it to suit just the 100 and have other dessert options.
A sheet cake is another option- but I've been served a piece of the "sheet cake" and felt shafted. They usually don't have the same flavor (icing, filling etc) as the real cake.
Don't cheap out on your guests!

i have never been to a wedding where they ran out of cake. i had one whole tier left of mine! at one wedding i wanted to get three pieces (then decided that was a little piggy of me.....:() they tend to cut the slices thin on cakes so people can eat some without having a lot left over on the plate and they assume if people HEART the cake, they would go back for seconds.
a sheet cake could work, but people just love to have fancy cakes.

yes it feeds everyone, with enough to save for the 1st anniversary. as for the sheet cake, people sometimes get a smaller, beautiful cake or a large one with nothing inside to cut in front of everyone, then have the sheet cake to feed the guests. no one at the wedding knows this tho.

The baker will usually tell you and make the cake according to how many people are going to be at your wedding. If you are lucky enough you'll get a venue that cuts your cake for you and serves it for you. They just cut it tier by tier starting with the layer 2nd from the top.

There should be enough cake for everyone. You are correct about the sheet cake. When using a sheet cake for the guests the tradional wedding cake doesn't need to be large. It could be just big enough for the bridal couple and the weddng party if so desired.
