Many of them are genuinely concerned about your salvation, so their motives are good, even if their actions leave a little to be desired. And some go door to door because their religion requires them to spend a certain number of hours a week in witnessing.

Personally, I always go to the door with one or both of my big German shepherds. Both dogs make so much noise and act so ferocious that the problem is usually over almost before it began.

If the person is pushy and doesn't take the hint, I simply smile and tell them, "These dogs can make it to the edge of my property in less than three seconds. Can you?"

I agree 100% with JediMaster on this one:

"put up a 'no solicitation' sign...if that doesn't work get a REALLY mean dog..."

I did some volunteer work for a political campaign putting door knockers on people's doors and we were instructed to AVOID any house that had a NO SOLICITORS sign. That should be enough to solve your problem. You'll still get a few that ignore it or don't see it, but it will reduce the stream to a trickle. And yes, we valued our own well-being enough to avoid any house with a large barking dog as well.

Also, your complaint I'm sure is against ALL solicitors and not just the bible worshipers, right?

OMG you are totally missing out. I swear to the god that doesn't exist, this is a true story. A friend of mine (female) and yes, she was just a friend, were living in a small town in CO and some Mormon missionaries came to the door and we invited them in and hung out for like two hours. Both of us are rabid atheists mind you. No fighting or anything we just hung out and looked at them for what they were; some cool kids out knocking on doors and talking about stuff. How great, really, I mean remove the god part and the possibility that they could be serial killers and it is just pretty bitchen.

Anywho, they got hooked on coming over and within three trips we were all getting drunk and cranking Black Sabbath and hot-tubbing it! Some really great guys really. I still think about them. They went on to do their missionary thing.

Believers are so cool because they don't have all that defensive, borderline personality thing going on where people are too good to talk to each other or be honest and open or have real unguarded conversations.

I always give them the time of day now. Any of them.

My statue of Ganesh at the front door of my house usually frightens the door-to-doorers........I also have a chalk board that reads 'Namaste' which means I honor the light in you or the god whichever you prefer. I don't do it to 'upset' Christians but it is my home and these are my guides and the the blessings I use.
My own mother thinks it's satanic but I can't convince her otherwise. I don't go to her house and tell her how horrible it is to see paintings of Jesus. I have some myself and they are quite beautiful. I guess Ganesh is indeed the remover of obstacles, literally, at my house.

If someone comes to your door selling girlscout cookies or magazine subscriptions or newly improved super-sudsing Jesus...that is their right. And it is your right to announce to all of them, "I'm not buying what you're selling" and then slam the door in their faces. Perhaps what we need is door to door intelligence salesmen who promote the virtues of education, logic, and reason. They could sell subscriptions to the American Atheist magazine. And they could also do big cookie drives to promote banning religion from polite society altogether.

I hear your complaint loud and clear, and I don't like them either, but....

Freedom gives them the "right" to come to your door and the lack of a gate and a proper sign is why they express that right. You can stop them if you really want to. It's up to you, of course.

Divine mandate!

A 12-gauge and a large dog make divine mandate take a back seat real quick-like, though.

Well, if you open the door, there's nothing you can do about it. You've technically 'accepted' them into your house. Unless you tell them to feck off, they basically have every right to be there.

So just tell them to feck off.
