Jim,all you need to do is give evolution a chance. Your cat will adapt to it's environment. It doesn't need you to clip it's nails and it has attempted to convey that to you,I have no doubt. Leave it alone. If biology wanted cats to have shorter nails they would have evolved them, unless biology is changing it's mind,in which case they will turn into shorter nails eventually. You just have to be patient.

I was told by the groomer who does my cat's nails to buy a pair of clippers at the pet store made specifically for cats and then just clip the curved part of the nail. Watch out where the vein in the nail is.

Notice how nicely most of us answer this question here in religion. And when we post questions in the cats section, it's like Armageddon.
Just use a nice little clipper that you can purchase in almost any pet story. Make sure to clip only the tips.

Do not declaw your cat!!!. They take the claws off with the first knuckle and then later they have a tremendous tendency to get arthritis in their paws because of it and it hurts to dig in their litter so they start going all over the house. The pounds are full of cats that have their claws removed and then people don't want them when they develop this problem so they end up getting put to sleep. Also it messes with their psych. and they start having real behavior problems especially when they can see outdoors and see other cats and they know they are missing theirs equipment to defend themselves---it's very bad really. Take your cat to the vets regularly for a pedicure. It costs hardly anything. Mine charges $6.00 is all and you don't even need an appointment generally. It takes like 10 minutes max to have mine done plus his anal glands dealt with. It's a no brainer when you consider that they have veins and stuff in their that if you try to cut them yourself you could cut wrong and really have a problem. Take it to the vets.

You do not need to pay to have it done..and DO NOT get it declawed..that is just cruel!
Take your cat, hold hre tight but not hurting her (you may want to wrap a towel around her to keep her steady).
Take fingernail clippers, or you can get special clawy clippers, and take her paw, carefully press it so the claws are out and clip ONLY the very tips. Be very careful not to get too far back or it will cut tissue. You only need to cut the tip off.
I have done it a million times with my own and others. Even a dog or two.
Good luck!

Being a cat lover myself (I own two) I would suggest taking your feline to a groomer or family vet to have the nails trimmed. If you are comfortable with doing it yourself, and know how (remember, if it you get to close you can hit a nerve and that will hurt your beloved friend) then you can find the clippers at your local pet store. Just be careful....most likely he/she will not lay down casually while you perform this horrific task!

They make claw-cutters for cutting a cat's nails. You should be able to find it in a pet store.
By the way: I hope you realize this question is in the wrong section.

Regular human nail clippers work great. The cat usually doesn't even care, none of mine do. If you get one that freaks out, just stick a sock over his head and he won't fight anymore.

Do you know how to clip them? If so, then put the cat in a towel to hold it while you clip his nails. If not, don't proceed as you could do damage to mr. kitty.

Cats use things like scratching posts to trim their nails naturally. Trying to clip them yourself will only get you scratched up.
Buy a scratching post, and let the cat do its thing.
